Dwars door Vlaanderen Men 2024 overview

The men’s Dwars door Vlaanderen takes place on Wednesday, 27 March and acts as the final pre-Tour of Flanders warm-up race ahead of Sunday’s main event. The midweek race isn’t the most prestigious of the Belgian Classics, but it is important, because of what it can reveal about form ahead of Flanders.

With a less challenging finale than Flanders, Dwars door Vlaanderen often lends itself towards something of a bunch sprint, and the fast men can expect to make it to the finish more easily than they would at Flanders. However, more attacking scenarios are also possible, with the climbs and cobbles offering plenty of chances to break the race apart.

Last year’s winner Christophe Laporte (Visma-Lease a Bike) won’t be present on the start line on Wednesday, and the only other former winner lining up will be Yves Lampaert (Soudal Quick-Step), so there’s a high chance that this race will see a brand new winner. Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) will be hoping for a sprint, where he’d be up against the likes of Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty), but riders like Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) will seek to make the race harder.

Dwars door Vlaanderen Men 2024 route: another testing day in Flanders

The 2024 Dwars door Vlaanderen is a 189km one-day race that will see many of the best Classics riders take on a hilly parcours in Flanders. While the race winds its way around many of the familiar towns of the bigger Classics, it avoids those bigger name climbs in favour of punchier, more paved options.

The race begins in Roeselare, with a flat prelude to the southeast making up the first 50km of the race before the climbs start with the Hellestraat with 137km to go. The race then loops into Oudenaarde where the climbs come thick and fast with the next six climbs coming in just 51km. Those climbs, which include the Knokteberg, Kortekeer, Berg Ten Haute and Kanarieberg, make up the middle section of the day and will set up the final push to the line where the final selection will be made.

The last third of the race will see most of the cobbled sectors, with five sectors coming in the last 45km. The climbs are shorter, as well, as the race continues to wind its way around the tight roads of Flanders. The final climb comes with around 10km to go as the race tackles the paved way up through the town of Nokere, while the last cobbled section comes with just 6km to go on the flat run back to Waregem for the finish.
