Dwars door Vlaanderen Women 2024 overview

Taking place on Wednesday, 27 March, Dwars door Vlaanderen is the final test before the Tour of Flanders. Though it’s less prestigious than the previous weekend’s Gent-Wevelgem, Dwars door Vlaanderen is an important Flanders warm-up featuring a handful of the same climbs and cobbles as Sunday’s main event.

Historically, Dwars door Vlaanderen has been a more sprinter-friendly Classic and often ends in a bunch kick, but it’s also been won by solo winners, most recently Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) in 2023. It’s not common for a rider to win both here and at the Tour of Flanders, but going well here in some way is a key indicator of form ahead of De Ronde. Equally, anyone who struggles in the gentler Dwars door Vlaanderen will throw up concerns about their performance on Sunday.

This year, Vollering will return as defending champion, but she’ll be up against some motivated sprinters and their teams, with the likes of Chiara Consonni (UAE Team ADQ), Vittoria Guazzini (FDJ-SUEZ) and Daria Pikulik (Human Powered Health) all hoping things stay together to the finish.

The women’s Dwars door Vlaanderen starts and finishes in Waregem, and takes in a total length of 130km. It features nine climbs, fewer than Flanders’ 12, and features more flat cobbled sectors, with six. The climbing is largely packed into the middle of the race, meaning the finale is flatter, which is why it lends itself well to a sprint. That said, solo or small moves are still possible, with the ascents and cobbles offering opportunities to make the race hard.

Dwars door Vlaanderen Women 2024 contenders

The 2024 Dwars door Vlaanderen will be a battle between a very strong sprint field and the opportunists hoping for a more selective finish. With Lorena Wiebes and Elisa Balsamo both skipping the race, 2022 winner Chiara Consonni (UAE Team ADQ) is probably the closest sprinter, with riders like Daria Pikulik (Human Powered Health) and Vittoria Guazzini (FDJ-SUEZ) close behind.

However, with Wiebes and Balsamo missing, the impetus to keep it together for a sprint will be reduced, and there are a number of strong attackers who could force a more selective finale.
